About Round Leather Lead

Techniques and experience of harness making which has been perfected for decades is condensed into a single leather lead.
The skillful hands of the craftsman changes a single piece of leather into a fine round rope.
The lead is so beautifully made that stitches cannot be seen.
Carefully selected leather that would not crack on the surface is bent around to create this lead. Special oil from Germany is applied so the lead is supple and strong. The lead will continue to change in hue and develop tastefully over years of usage.

Carefully Considered Lead Length

Carefully Considered Lead Length

We carefully considered the best suitable length and are committed to develop the best products for our customers. We discovered that the best length is 100~110cm.
Imagine yourself in the high society of the United Kingdom. The figure of a gentleman and his elegant dog. They wait to greet you and the gentleman holds the lead in his hand which has a perfect length and naturally forms the letter "J" as you can see in the photo.
This is called the "J-lead" and it is said to represent the most beautiful relationship between a human and dog. Therefore, we are committed to producing luxurious leather leads of length 100~110cm.

What is "Nume" Leather?

The leather used in our workshop is all Japanese "Nume" leather. The method of producing "Nume" leather has been used since ancient times. The bark of trees, wood, leaves and fruit are used to extract tannin. The cow skin leather is made from tanning tannins. The cross-section of the leather is light brown or brown in color. Its characteristic is robust and less elastic. As this leather is stiff, it is used for applications such as the base of horse saddles, belts, baseball gloves and shoes.

The drawback of this leather is that it is susceptible to moisture such as rain water. As it absorbs moisture, it encourages the growth of bacteria. If it is not sufficiently oiled, it could crack or tear.
As it takes a long time to tan leather using tannins, most mainstream leather is made from Chrome tanning technique which uses chemicals to produce leather. This method is unfriendly to the environment. However, "Nume" leather is made from natural tannin materials, so when the materials are discarded, they decompose naturally into microorganisms in the soil and do not create hazardous waste substances that pollute the environment. "Nume" leather is an environmentally safe and friendly product which is accepted even in Europe where environmental protection is very strict.

Features Of "Nume" Leather

"Nume" leather has unparalleled toughness and develops a beautiful look with usage over time as the surface changes (aging process).

1. Toughness

The material of "Nume" leather is strong and robust, so the product can be used normally with proper care for some 10 years.

2. Aging Over Time

"Nume" leather absorbs the oils from your hand as you use it. The leather will also discolor under the influence of sunlight or ultraviolet rays. With exposure to sunlight and heat, in addition to the massaging effect on the leather when the product is used, the natural oils in the leather will gradually seep out. As the fat content in the leather rises to the surface, it creates a glossy look and waterproof effect to a certain degree. These changes are known as the aging process of leather. Slowly over time, the look of the "Nume" leather product changes. It becomes aged and more attractive. It would not be an exaggeration to say, this aged look is attractive to many people.

"Koba" Design

The colors of the leather material we use are "Nume" original, red and black. A thick leather of 5mm is used to produce the pet equipment. The original color of the leather is "Nume" brown but it is also stained with natural dyes to make it red or black.

However, as the leather is thick, the core of the leather is unable to absorb the dye. Therefore, the leather surface color and the color of the cut edge will have a different color. We call this part the "Koba".

It is common practice for leather goods makers to match the color of the leather surface and cut edge ("Koba") by painting it. However, in our workshop we are environmentally conscious so we eliminate the use of unnecessary paint and produce a beautiful product with gradient colors of natural leather and dye color leather.

Product Maintenance

The benefits of hand-sewn leather goods is the "possibility of maintenance".

While leather goods can normally be used for a long time without factory maintenance, sometimes there is a case of emergency. In normal use, the problem faced by leather goods is wetness from rain or dryness. However, about one third of our customers request repair and maintenance due to products torn by dog biting. The stitching is frayed and customers inquire to ask if it is possible to repair. If the product is made by machine sewing, it is difficult to repair as it is impossible to pass the sewing machine needle again through the same hole again. Also, the sewing machine makes fine perforations in the leather and would cause the leather to tear more easily.

In the case of hand-sewing, it is possible to rethread the needle through the same hole. While it takes time and labor, it can be repaired. This is only possible with hand-sewn leather products.

Design without rivets

Design without rivets

The spare parts that are most used in leather products is rivets.

Rivets are used most commonly today to reinforce products and make them sturdy which is similar to rivets used on the famous Levi's jeans. Hence, most of the pet collars, pet equipment and harnesses are produced with rivets.

However, rivets could also damage the leather products. Rivets can cause cracks through the holes on the leather and could cause the leather to tear easily. As a result, rivets could shorten the lifespan of the leather products.

While rivets are certainly excellent spare parts to use and can strength products easily when attached, it is not a perfect thing to use for pet equipment as it cannot be repaired.

Although maintenance and repair is not simple, products are more durable and safer if no rivets are used. Hence, our design does not have rivets.
